In a world that moves so fast, stopping to give thanks for the little things around us is a fundamental life lesson. With this in mind, Santa Ana Primary School transformed its classrooms to celebrate one of the most iconic festivals of Anglo-Saxon culture: Thanksgiving.
En un mundo que avanza tan deprisa, detenernos a dar las gracias por las pequeñas cosas que nos rodean es una lección de vida fundamental. Con esta idea, el CEIP Santa Ana ha transformado sus aulas para celebrar una de las festividades más emblemáticas de la cultura anglosajona: el Día de Acción de Gracias (Thanksgiving).
As part of the English curriculum and the school’s Bilingual Program, the goal was not only to teach a language but to immerse students in the cultural context that surrounds it. Understanding traditions is key to understanding a language. Therefore, we took a “virtual trip” to the United States to understand the historical origins of this holiday, using educational videos adapted to each grade level. The children learned the story of the Pilgrims, the help provided by Native Americans, and the meaning of the harvest, connecting the past with the present.
Dentro del currículo del Área de Inglés y como pilar fundamental del Programa Bilingüe del centro, el objetivo no ha sido solo enseñar un idioma, sino sumergir al alumnado en el contexto cultural que lo rodea. Entender las tradiciones es clave para entender una lengua. Por ello, se ha viajado virtualmente hasta los Estados Unidos para comprender el origen histórico de esta fiesta, utilizando videos educativos adaptados a cada nivel. Los niños y niñas han podido conocer la historia de los peregrinos, la ayuda de los nativos americanos y el significado de la cosecha, conectando el pasado con el presente.
Theory gave way to practice through diverse activities, including digital resources such as interactive online games to reinforce specific vocabulary (turkey, harvest, family, pumpkin). They also demonstrated their skills through crafts and artistic worksheets where autumn colors (oranges, browns, and yellows) took center stage.
La teoría ha dado paso a la práctica a través de actividades diversas que han incluido Recursos digitales, como Juegos online interactivos para reforzar el vocabulario específico (turkey, harvest, family, pumpkin). También han demostrado sus habilidades mediante recortables y fichas artísticas donde los colores otoñales (naranjas, marrones y amarillos) han sido los protagonistas.
The power of saying “Thank You” goes beyond learning English; this activity had a profound component of emotional education. Each group dedicated time to personal reflection, thinking about what makes them happy and what they feel fortunate for. It was moving to see the students express their gratitude for essential aspects of their lives: from their family and friends to their pets or favorite toys. This gratitude was captured in creative, fun, and heartfelt greetings.
El poder de decir “Gracias” va más allá del aprendizaje del inglés, la actividad ha tenido un profundo componente de educación emocional. Cada grupo ha dedicado un tiempo a la reflexión personal, pensando en aquello que les hace felices y por lo que se sienten afortunados. Ha sido emocionante ver cómo el alumnado expresaba su agradecimiento por aspectos esenciales de sus vidas: desde su familia y amigos, hasta sus mascotas o sus juguetes favoritos. Esta gratitud se ha plasmado en felicitaciones creativas, divertidas y llenas de sentimiento.
